Plot:

 

Batman heads to fight Emperor Penguin head on, who is lying in wait for him.  Meanwhile, Penguin is free from charges and heads to take back his kingdom.

 

Our Hero:

 

Batman needs some more training since he just got his butt whipped by a guy who really shouldn’t be giving him this much trouble

 

Our Villain:

 

Even though he lost, he was still happy in the end.  Got to give him the fact that he was pretty humble about losing and all.

 

Our Side Characters:

 

Does the Penguin count as a side character in this comic?

 

Action:

 

Curses, foiled by the power of tree bark.

 

Dialogue:

 

Batman: You’re a monster.

Me: *Snickers*

 

Art:

 

Oohh, look at those sparks fly!

 

Most Memorable Moment:

 

Batman needs to prepare more before he goes into these situations, otherwise he might end up hanging again.

Ogilvy is finally down and Penguin is back in place.  However, Batman is not going to have any time to rest if that last panel is anything to go by.

Why am I not surprise that there was a demon looking crime boss at one point?

Detective Comics #19 (2013)

Cover:

Batman!  Behind you!

Plot:

It’s Detective Comics 900^th issue university and there are tons of stories to be found here!  From Emperor Penguin’s next move to what Bane has to do with the Court of Owls.

Our Hero:

It just never ends for him does it?

Our Villains:

Bats!  Lots of bats and also weird looking mob bosses.

Our Side Characters:

Well aren’t you all just pricks.

Action:

Hope the driver of that car has insurance for giant bats.

Dialogue:

How does one talk with a lightbulb for a head anyways?

Art:

With so many different artists, the quality is over all the place.

Most Memorable Moment:

Man, the parents are not going to like this little development with their kids.

Final Page:

There’s quite a few of thing if you consider each and every story to have a final page.

What We Should Take from This Comic:

John Layman is clearly laying down a lot of ground work and future plotlines with all of these little stories of his (besides one of them) and the battle between Batman and Emperor Penguin is about happen soon.  Who will win?

What We Do Take From This Comic:

I want to know more about the backstory with Mr. Combustible and figure what the hell is going on with his appearance.

Detective Comics #18 (2013)

Cover:

Actually, very nicely design and drawn cover.

Plot:

Things are not looking up for old Penguin, with his former assistant stealing everything he has and living him out to dry.  Batman hasn’t been doing too good either, with Robin gone and now Mr. Zsasz missing.

Our Hero:

Love his attitude to never give up.

Our Villain:

I don’t know.  The monocle thing seems a bit too much.

Our Side Characters:

Kind of a weird turnaround now with old Penguin being a side character now instead of Ogilvy, when it was the opposite only a few months ago.

Action:

Good old classic Bat-Punch.

Dialogue:

Who doesn’t love a good bird metaphor?

Art:

Love how the Children’s Center’s banner now has two “formerly known as” pieces on it.

Most Memorable Moment:

Batman always knows how to make an entrance.

Final Page:

For some reason, I always thought the serum was green instead.

What We Should Take from This Comic:

Ogilvy has taken out one of the two people he needs gone in order to completely rule Gotham. Now with obtaining the Manbat serum, he has the power to go after his next target.

What We Do Take From This Comic:

Nothing like crowbar-ing in an event into a comic that does not need it.

Cover:

Batman just does not get along with clowns at all.

Plot:

The League of Smiles is out terroizing Gotham residents and lead by a man called Merrymaker.  Who is this guy and can Batman stop this group before there are more bodies?

Our Hero:

Nice to see you using that brain of yours Batty.  Don't see that often enough.

Our Villain:

I'm wondering if he was recently playing Assassin's Creed II when the inspiration for the costume struck him.

Our Side Characters:

Gordon probably didn't tell Bullock about that scanner just for this very moment

Action:

Broken Mask Count So Far: 2

Dialogue:

Batman is rather chatty than usual.

Art:

He's totally the villain.  You cannot tell me he isn't the villain.

Most Memorable Moment:

Spit take!  I don't see enough of those comics.

Final Page (Main Story):

Ms. Finch: Boss, you should really stop with these cheesy lines.

Final Page (Backup Story):

Eh, he should stick to his day job instead of drawing.

What We Should Take from This Comic:

Sometimes, it's not the Joker himself that causes the most problems.  It's the people he influences and creates that can truly bring out the chaos for the city.

The Merrymaker's costume is pretty awesome.
